Quick Tips For the Month of September

What to Do:

Wondering what, if anything, you should be doing for your trees and plants to prepare for the cooler temperatures? Here are a few things that you can do to maintain a safe and beautiful property:

1. Plant new trees and shrubs: The fall moisture (rains) helps the trees and shrubs establish their root systems. When the air temperatures are cooler than the soil, new root growth is encouraged without new top growth. The result is a stronger, better developed root system for the next spring when the plant begins to grow.

2. Thin out overgrowth before winter: Pruning overgrowth is always a good idea, to increase light and air. The goal is to maintain or develop the structure of the tree so that it has a solid, healthy base.

3. Plant spring flowering bulbs: It should be easy to find bulbs for sale at this time of year. Plant now before the ground begins to freeze. The bulbs will spend the winter growing their roots to grow beautiful blooms early in the spring. Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Bluebell, Iris, Snowflake, and so many more. Some are annuals and some are perennials.
