As we enter the month of March, spring and an increase in warm weather are top of mind for most of us. Unfortunately, at the beginning of February, legendary groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicted that we would be in for another few weeks of winter weather. Though this is not always a reliable prediction, it seems to be holding up with the winter storms raging across the nation. The tradition of determining the length of winter by that of a groundhog seeing its shadow is one that we have long looked to for insight into the weather to come, even if just comedically. Before talking a bit about spring yard preparation let’s dive into how we started using these furry animals as a weather catalyst.

The holiday has evolved over the years as it has been adapted and embraced all over the world by different cultures. As the legend goes, local newspaper editor, Clymer Freas came up with the idea for the first Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney during the year 1887. The scent and look of roses are commonly associated with Valentine’s day and the month of February. They are a symbol of love, rebirth, and renewal. There are currently over 150 genus Rosa ( Rose Family) species around the world. Some staple Valentine’s day gifts dawning this flower that you will see are freshly bought bouquets, rose petal trails leading to heartfelt surprises, and who can forget the rose teddy bears we are all seeing on TikTok! But have you ever wondered where these magnificent flowers came from? While the actual point of discovery of these beautiful florals is unknown, we do know their existence dates back longer than recorded history. Despite the lack of written evidence experts can still map out key historic points associated with roses. This week’s blog post will discuss just this, breaking down the flower’s historic usage throughout time.

First, let’s start with the furthest point that we can trace this floral through history. Researchers under Dr. Dilcher and his team uncovered fossilized remains of Roses in Colorado, USA. These remains were determined to be over 35 million years old according to the University Of Illinois experts on this topic. The fossilization of the rose was made possible by a combination of environmental conditions and geological processes, as well as the efforts of dedicated scientists.

When looking at how roses have impacted different time periods I think that the 15th and 17th centuries were periods where roses were consistently desired. As we enter the 18th century one of the most notable associations to the rose is the world-renowned film “Alice in Wonderland”. For those who haven’t seen the movie, it is a tale of twists and turns, eccentric tea parties, and rabbit holes. But most notable for me and many others, is the character of the Red Queen. The Red Queen was known for her eccentric garden which was full of bright red roses as well as white-painted roses. This film has grossed billions of dollars over the years with an array of adaptions one most recently featuring Mia Wasikowska as Alice .

Lastly, we will take a look at where roses are today in the 21st century. A staple piece to any Valentine’s day surprise celebration, the rose is as prevalent today as it ever was. One of my favorite parts of living in this time is seeing the creativity of others on social media. I have seen some very extravagant rose surprises, as well as heartwarming subtle giftings of a simple rose bouquet. With the symbolism, this plant holds it is a great way to showcase one’s love for another in a meaningful and beautiful way.

In this blog post, we will explore three styles of Christmas tree decorations that I find to be the most iconic.

You will soon notice this in your front and backyard lawns as what is commonly known in the landscaping community as “Winter Kill” takes hold of your grass. These are natural parts of the changing of the seasons, which will, in turn, give room for new growth in the spring. But, not all plant species are afflicted by this yearly transformation. Some tree families, such as Evergreen Trees, are immune to this cycle. Let’s break it down.

According to The New York State Parks Blog, Evergreen is a term used for trees that keep their “leaves” throughout the winter as well as their green color. People commonly associate this term with one type of tree, the Pine Tree family. In reality, quite a few different tree species fall into this category. The Dangers of Ash Trees

Why is this such a large problem? It becomes a problem because cutting down Ash trees can be extremely dangerous. According to the National Deer Association (NDA) “ If someone is sawing down diseased ash that has been hit by EAB, the top could potentially break off and fall before the rest of the tree, or in a different direction. It could end up falling on the chainsaw operator.” This means that it is highly advised to have professional help with the removal of an Ash tree.

How can you tell if your Ash tree is at risk and needs to be cut down? Make sure to check these warning signs as advised by the DEC: Dieback, yellowing, and browning of leaves. An increase in the woodpecker activity is an early sign of EAB infestation as well. This will lead to large strips of bark falling off the tree, which can reveal an S-shaped larval gallery. Finally, look on the truck for small D-shaped holes which are formed when a beetle emerges. If left for too long, the tree will be susceptible to falling on its own. Typically, the top of the tree will fall first without warning, causing danger for those who may be around the tree.

What should you do if you have found EAB? Do not take the tree down on your own. You can contact the DEC to confirm an EAB infestation. Make sure you remove (or at least loosen) your holiday lights before growing season. Leaving lights on may eventually kill the tree or the branches if they are tightly wrapped.

2. Rock Salt Affects Your Trees

Did you know that rock salt can affect the ability of your tree’s roots to absorb nutrients, oxygen, and water?!? Look for a rock salt alternative such as coarse builder sand or calcium chloride. They may be more expensive but they won’t be as harmful to the health of your tree.

3. Watch out for Dead or Broken Branches

Are Trees More Dangerous in Winter

Most trees native to our climate are perfectly prepared for the deep freeze temperatures of winter. They spend the winter months in dormancy, much like hibernation, where everything within the tree slows down such as metabolism, growth, etc.

Roots are generally protected under the soil and snow acts as an insulator. Trees contain less water in winter, but more sugar, which acts like an antifreeze. Cellular mechanisms inside the tree will change as temperatures cool, which help the tree to cope with the stress of winter freezing.

Q: Is it ok to plant trees in the summer or do I need to wait until fall or spring?
A: Although the ideal time to plant is in the fall or spring, it’s fine to plant most trees in the summer – provided they have a fairly robust root system, such as those that come in containers. Watering is extremely important and must be done every day.

Q: I want to have some Ivy planted in the place where my tree was removed, which is in full shade. I’m going on vacation a few weeks after they will be planted and want to know if they’ll be ok?
A: Ivy is a hardy plant. We recommend that you water them every day until you leave. That should give them a good start and it’s helpful that they will be in the shade. To be cautious, you may want to ask a neighbor to water them once a week or so, depending on how much rain has fallen.

Q: My trees and shrubs have grown out a lot this summer, but I’ve heard that I should wait until fall to have them trimmed.
A: Trees and shrubs grow in spring and by summer, are filled out. Branches seem to have crept closer to the house, they are full of leaves, and maybe even hanging low. If your purpose of pruning is to enhance flowering, it will depend on the tree. But it’s always best to wait until it is finished flowering. However, if the tree or shrub presents a concern such as overgrowth or safety, it will be fine to prune as long as it is done properly. Don’t over- prune.

Q: I have an old oak tree to be cut down. Should I get the stump grinding, too?
A: There are a few reasons to include a stump grinding service with your tree removal. Safety is most important, so if the stump is smaller you don’t want to trip over it or ruin your lawnmower. Stumps may also attract insects. Decaying wood makes a great home for ants, wood borers, termites, and other unwanted pests.
